Argument for YES on Referenda #1
-
Professional football teams are not merely businesses — they are civic institutions woven into the identity of their cities. The Green Bay Packers stand as living proof that community ownership works. For over a century, the Packers have remained rooted in a small Wisconsin city that would never survive the economic calculus of a traditional ownership group, yet the franchise is financially healthy, competitively successful, and beloved worldwide. Giving fans a structured opportunity to co-own their team when it changes hands would replicate that stability across the league, ensuring that franchises remain anchored to their communities rather than subject to the whims of a single billionaire owner.
The threat of relocation has haunted NFL cities for decades. Oakland, San Diego, St. Louis, Cleveland, Baltimore, and Houston have all lost teams, leaving devastated fan bases behind with no recourse. A cooperative ownership model would functionally eliminate that threat. When tens of thousands of ordinary shareholders hold a stake in a franchise, there is no single controlling party who can quietly negotiate a sweetheart stadium deal in Las Vegas or Los Angeles and pull the rug out from under a city overnight. The fans become the immovable anchor, and the democratic governance structure that comes with cooperative ownership ensures that decisions reflect the community's interests, not a private owner's portfolio strategy.
Critics will argue that fan ownership limits financial flexibility, but the Packers consistently demonstrate otherwise. The club has renovated Lambeau Field, retained marquee players, and operated as a first-class organization without a billionaire’s checkbook. In an era of skyrocketing franchise valuations, this proposal doesn’t require fans to outbid private investors — it simply requires the NFL to offer the option when a sale occurs. Fans who cannot or choose not to participate are unaffected. Those who do participate gain a genuine democratic voice in the franchise they have supported for generations. Fairness, stability, and community loyalty all point in the same direction: vote YES.
